Is Carbon Monoxide in My Home Something to Be Concerned About?

October 20, 2020

Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause health problems or even death, especially when you’re exposed to it at a high level or on a regular basis. It can show up in virtually any residence, which is why everyone needs a carbon monoxide detector. There are a few main sources of carbon monoxide in the home.

Gas Stoves and Ranges

These appliances can be a source of carbon monoxide. It’s given off by the flame that heats your food. When using them, you should always have the hood fan on so there’s proper ventilation. If you don’t have a fan, open a nearby window whenever you cook something.

Fireplaces

Smoke from the fire contains carbon monoxide that may enter your home. Always make sure the flue is open before you start a fire.

Furnaces

If you have a gas furnace, it requires regular maintenance. As part of this service, the technician will make sure it’s operating safely and not releasing carbon monoxide.

My Guys Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning of Conroe, TX, performs regular tune-ups and inspections for our customers. We have an annual maintenance agreement that includes two preseason safety checks and other benefits.

Grills

You should never use grilles inside your home, and that includes the garage. They burn fossil fuels and release carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide can quickly reach toxic levels of concentration. Only use a grill outside in the open air.

Portable Generators

Many people have died from bringing their portable generators indoors when the power is out. This equipment produces toxic levels of carbon monoxide while it’s being used. When it is in use, place it at least 25 feet away and downwind from your home.

Cars

Cars that run on gasoline release carbon monoxide. You should never warm up your car in the garage. This will cause carbon monoxide to build up in that area and potentially seep inside your home.
