How To Clean Air Conditioning Unit

AC Cleaning in Conroe, TX

A clean and functional air conditioning unit is essential to ensure comfort at home. One of the most ignored causes of air conditioner inefficiency is dirt and debris buildup on your AC. Here is a guide on how to clean your air conditioning unit.

1. Turn Off the Power to the AC

Air conditioners have different moving parts. Since your safety is paramount, ensure you turn off the power at the breaker box. If your indoor air conditioning unit is in a dark place, you may want to set up lighting. Turning off the power at the box means you won’t have any lights.

2. Open the Air Conditioning Unit

The blower unit has a door to the evaporator coil. You might need to remove screws or foil duct tape, depending on your air conditioning unit. Luckily, there are usually only a few screws or bolts that hold the door in place.

3. Clean the AC Evaporator Coils

Use a soft brush to remove dust from the coil. The dust often carries whatever particulates that gather from your home interior. Ensure you wear a mask, especially if you have allergies, since the particulates may contain pollen.

Alternatively, you can use a no-rinse coil cleaner that you can acquire from a local store. The spray solution foams up and then drips into the unit’s drain pan, carrying the dust and dirt with it.

4. Clean the AC Drain Pan

Clean out the drain pan once the coil cleaner has done its job. Soap, hot water, and bleach are ideal. Make a 50/50 solution of water and bleach, then pour it out the drain to ensure it is clear.

5. Close the AC Access Panel

Reattach the panel with the same screws you took out in the first place. Use an HVAC metal foil tape to seal the top and bottom of the access panel.
