Should You Use a Humidifier or Dehumidifier in the Winter?
You want to be able to stay comfortable throughout the year. In the summer, a dehumidifier can be used to make the air inside your home more comfortable. In the winter, you might benefit from having a humidifier. That’s because cold air simply cannot hold onto as much moisture as warm air. Winters can be very dry, leading to issues with your skin, respiratory passages, and hair. Dry air can also be hard on your wood floors, wood furniture, and any house plants.
How Humidifiers Work
A humidifier can combat that dry air, making it much more comfortable in your home. Portable humidifiers are usually set up in bedrooms and used at night to help with breathing and comfort. They have water reservoirs and heat the water so that steam fills the air.
Then, there are whole-house humidifiers. They primarily fall into three types. The first is a bypass humidifier, and this works with a furnace system. Warm air is pushed by the furnace across the humidifier’s water panel. The warm air gets moisture and then is blown into the home. A fan-powered humidifier is similar in design, but it uses its own fan instead of the fan from the furnace. The other type of whole-house humidifier is a steam humidifier. It boils water and then sends that steam into the air before it enters the ductwork.
Each type of humidifier has its own benefits. Some are more expensive than others, and you should also take their efficiency into account. My Guys Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning can assist customers in and around Conroe, TX, with humidifiers if they’d like to improve their indoor air quality.
