Who Invented Air Conditioning?

AC System in Conroe, Texas

Houston, TX, is well-known for its hot temperatures. When the summer arrives, homeowners depend on a well-functioning AC for indoor comfort. Air conditioning is a standard feature in Texas homes, and you may take the cool air for granted. However, the equipment that keeps your home comfortable is the result of years of innovative thinking.

Keeping Cool in the Ancient World

Early cave dwellers had an advantage when it came to climate. Most underground caverns maintain a constant temperature throughout the year. As more advanced civilizations formed, they invented new ways to lower the temperature. In ancient Egypt, a damp cloth hanging in a doorway used evaporation to cool the breeze. Cold mountain water running through aqueducts could reduce the heat in stuffy Roman homes.

In northern climates, villagers learned methods for harvesting ice and packing it with straw or another insulator. These ice houses provided some relief and refrigeration well into the summer months.

Cooling with Mist

Human beings have long understood the cooling power of evaporation. Attempts to harness this ability mechanically began in the 1800s. In 1851, an inventor named John Gorrie developed a cold air machine that used compressed air and water to provide a cooling mist.

The First AC Unit

It was not until 1902 that an electrical air conditioning unit would come on the scene. In that year, Willis Carrier designed a machine that used evaporation and condensation to control the temperature, humidity and cleanliness of indoor air. While it took some trial and error, the result was the first air conditioner unit. Carrier received the patent for his device in 1906.

Over the next few decades, AC technology continued to improve. Engineers found ways to use gases like ammonia and freon to give greater control of the cooling process. More recently, they have developed more environmentally-friendly refrigerants like Puron.
